Before the Swipe: How Traditional Debit Systems Worked in the Pre-Digital Era

Paper Cheques (Cek Fisik)

Paper cheques functioned essentially as the ancient precursor to the modern debit card. Instead of handing over physical cash, an account holder wrote an authorization slip instructing their bank to transfer a specific amount directly to a merchant or third party. Clearing these cheques took days, as physical paper had to be sorted, transported, and verified between clearinghouses and banks.

3. The Local Store “Bon” System: Trust-Based Community Credit

In neighborhood stores and wholesale trade, daily micro-transactions rarely involved immediate bank interaction. Instead, merchants utilized a localized debit system commonly known as the “Bon” system or store tab.

Built on Community Trust

Before formal credit scoring existed, local commerce thrived on social accountability. Merchants knew their customers personally, their families, and their employment cycles. Customers could walk into a store, take necessary household goods, and have the amount debited to their personal tab, agreeing to settle the debt on payday.

Carbon Paper Receipt Books

To keep both parties honest, store owners used duplicate receipt pads lined with carbon paper. When a purchase was recorded:

  • The original handwritten note (nota) stayed with the merchant as proof of the customer’s growing balance.
  • The carbon copy was handed to the customer to track their own spending.
