The Chronological Journey of Global Banking: From Temples to Central Institutions

The Rise of National and Central Banks (17th – 18th Century CE)
During this period, banks shifted from serving wealthy families to managing empires. The Bank of Venice expanded its role from a simple deposit house to a manager of state finances.

Governments realized they needed centralized control over their economies. This led to the birth of the first true national and central banks, including:

  1. Sveriges Riksbank (Bank of Sweden) – Founded in 1668
  2. Bank of England – Founded in 1694

Industrialization and Globalization (19th – 20th Century CE)
With the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, state-owned banks urged private, individual bankers to merge, creating massive banking conglomerates capable of funding mega-projects like railways and factories. Specialization emerged, giving birth to cooperative banks designed specifically to support agriculture and local industries.

The ultimate stabilization of the global financial system occurred in 1920 during the Brussels International Financial Conference, backed by the League of Nations. The conference concluded that every sovereign nation should establish a central bank and transition fully to paper currency to conserve the world’s physical gold reserves.

From ancient Babylonian clay tablets to the digital transactions of today, banking has always been driven by one core human need: trust.
